The Institute of Ethiopian Studies (IES), housed in Emperor Haile Sellassie's former Palace now on the main campus of Addis Ababa University, has, for almost forty years, facilitated scholarship and spread knowledge on Ethiopia through its conferences, lectures, and publications and, very significantly, through its Museum and Library.
The Institute possesses the world’s largest and most important collections on Ethiopia.
The Museum is visited by innumerable students, as well as by teachers, foreign researchers, citizens and travellers. Its collections include unique anthropological exhibits and works of art: icons, crosses, musical instruments and objects of daily life.
The Library, which is growing rapidly, is consulted by scholars and research students from all over the world. It contains extensive collections not only of books, periodicals and articles about Ethiopia, but also of manuscripts, archives, microfilms, and photographs.
